I was actually in two different groups-- this is my third time being brought into something like this.
The first time was the... bear thing. It was in a village, and people would get possessed. They would kill every week unless we caught and purified them. The second time was a summer camp, and there was a specific threshold for deaths that had to occur. [ he sighs. ] We actually didn't learn about that until later, so the task was given to a few specific people each week to make sure people were dying.
You're not the first person who's mentioned that to me... That this isn't even your second time. It sounds really awful, to have gone through it twice and then to get here...
[he takes in those details, though, and after a moment:]
Okay, the first one I understand, but for the second... If you didn't know until the end that there was a threshold, then how did they get the people that they chose for a task to do it? Or, did the people with that task know about the threshold, but the rest of you didn't learn until later?
I believe they knew about it, but the rest of us didn't. There were a few groups of two, and as far as they were aware, they were the only two given that task until they later on discovered each other. I think they were only meant to be a backup in case no one else killed, but since everyone else didn't know about the requirement for so long...
It was a small number at first, but then later on it grew each week... probably because they realized the quota wasn't being hit and we were running out of time.
... if it helps, the remaining living organized it so that they would just take each other out instead of following the usual formula of waiting to kill Thursday night. And then everyone got to choose who they wanted the final person left to be.
That person would be given the power to grant wishes, so we needed it to be someone we could all trust.
Well, the situation there was a bit different. The dead received information every week by doing tasks, and we'd give it to the living through letters. We found out only one could survive towards the end, so we told them and that's what they decided to do.
