The concept of being in space is cool, but also kinda freaks me out.

Well, like, if anything goes wrong on a spaceship you're basically screwed immediately.

Oh. Wait - really? Why?

There's no oxygen in space. So if there's ever, like, a single hole in an outer wall it could suck out all the air and then you can't breathe and die. Or you freeze.

Sure!

We had a little bit of space travel during my lifetime, but definitely not at the level of putting this kind of stuff on a ship. [ wait. realizes she should clarify. ] Not something just anyone could do, though.

Is it harder than driving a car?

[bxkautx]

Oh yeah, by a lot. Driving a car's easy. But for space travel you have to have a lot more qualifications and training.

[agleam]

Why's that? Just because more can go wrong, or...?

[bxkautx]

With a car it's pretty much just wheels and steering and how fast you're going, right? And then some other features like lights to indicate to other drivers when you're turning or slowing down.

But a rocketship has to be a lot more precise about every single thing it's doing. And it's not just rolling along a road, it's gotta break through the atmosphere and fight gravity the whole way. Plus once you're in space there's nowhere to like... refuel. If anything goes wrong you have way less help, resources, and ways to fix it.

Not that a lot of people don't die in car accidents, though.

Yeah, it's pretty common.

I don't really have statistics on it. And that's not how the statistic would work. It would be more about like... a certain number of deaths per year, probably, because people drive around every day.

[though it'd be nice to think the future meant things didn't go wrong as much.]
